NEW BSA LEARNING CENTER

FAQ

Online training courses can be completed and instructor led courses tracked at the BSA Learn Center in my.Scouting Tools.

Log onto http://my.scouting.org   Training courses can be found by selecting the Home button in the upper left corner, then My Dashboard in the menu list. It will default to the My Training section which was also enhanced providing 4 new tab selections:

  • •    YPT – displays the Youth Protection training courses available.
  • •    Training Center – displays the Scouting programs containing the training courses applicable to the specific program.
  • •    Requirements – displays training courses required to become position-trained for your current registered position(s).
  • •    Completions – displays training courses that were completed.

Click on Requirements to see what training your position needs to take.

NEW CUB SCOUT ONLINE TRAINING

Cub Scout Leaders can take all their training online.
When a Cub Scout Leader clicks on Requirements as directed above, you will see a list of courses you need to take for your position.

For example:

You can take the training by clicking on the box.
The new Cub Scout training works fine with Internet Explorer 9 or later; Safari 5.1 or later; or Google Chrome 17.  Right now your best experience is with Chrome (worse experience with Firefox.)   Phones will be supported next year.

MAKE SURE YOUR BROWSER IS SET TO ALLOW POP UPS

The training is modular and allows you to take each module separately.  The Training Programs or courses are made up of individual learning plans which are classes grouped into categories.  The learning plans (there are three in our example) are divided into classes. Each class is pretty short (4 to 12 minutes long) so you can actually do training in between other daily activities.  The learning system keeps track of what you have completed.

Click on the course you need to take.  For example:

You will then be taken to the BSA Learn Center.

AFTER LOGGIN ONTO THE LEARNING SYSTEM, BOOKMARK THE PAGE SO YOU CAN EASILY RETURN

*  note: soon you will no longer need to log in separately
If you are not currently a registered Cub Scout Leader or your Membership  ID is not in your profile as http://myscouting.org, then skip to section B.

A.    IF YOU ARE A REGISTERED CUB SCOUT LEADER
If you are a registered Cub Scout Leader and your Membership ID is in your profile in http://myscouting.org then you can click on the tab MY LEARNING at the top of the page.
Your learning plan for your position will then be displayed.  For example:

Click on the Learning Plan you wish to work on.  You will be presented with the courses in that plan and your status:

Click on the class you wish to complete and launch the course.  Each course is short (about 2 to 12 minutes in length.)

When you are finished, you will return here.  The system remembers what you have taken, so you don’t have to retake any part.  Once all the classes are taken for any Learning Plan that plan is marked complete.  Once all learning plans for a course (e.g., Den Leader Specifics) is completed, the course will be marked completed.  Every class completion is recorded automatically at the BSA national office and if the class is needed for another Learning Plan it is automatically marked as completed.
There is a lot more in the system to discover on your own.  Take a look around.  It is very sophisticated.
There are three tutorials on the system available as well.  They are located on the How to tab at the top of the Learning System page.

B.    IF YOU ARE NOT REGISTERED OR DO NOT HAVE YOUR MEMBERSHIP ID IN MYSCOUTING

Scroll down the page and click on your program, in our case: Cub Scouting

Then we are ready to select the position we want to be trained for.    Click on the bar that says Select a Training Program, then the program to take.  In our example Den Leader Training:

You will then be presented with a list of Learning Plans that are required for your Training Program.  In our example, there are three.  Hover next to the word ‘Incomplete’ and click on the green plus sign to add that Learning Plan to your Training Plan.  You will need to click on each one of the three:

Now you are ready to begin your online training for these plans.
Scroll up to the top of the page and select the My Learning tab.  Going forward, you will return to this tab whenever you wish to take your training.    You will be presented with your training progress towards your plan.  For example:

Click on the Learning Plan you wish to work on.  You will be presented with the courses in that plan and your status:

Click on the class you wish to complete and launch the course.  Each course is short (about 2 to 12 minutes in length.)

When you are finished, close the window by clicking the X in the upper right of the window: you will return to this page.
